This Playa Del Rey Clean Up is personally very close to my heart. Since I moved here 3 years ago, I have gone to this beach at least once a week, sometimes everyday to meditate. Now, that I'm moving to Long Beach next month, it feels just right to spend my last month here celebrating, connecting and cleaning up Playa Del Rey.

Here’s to doing vs trying.

Challenging imposter syndrome and not letting my limiting beliefs get in my way.
It’s easy to justify why no one shows up for the events we put on, or respects our work if we don’t post about it, promote it, or put out in the universe that we believe in our plan.
This time, I reached out to my contacts, jumped out of my comfort zone and cold called local businesses to ask for donations, sponsorships, or even to promote it to their communities. This time, there is no excuse - to fulfill my limiting beliefs. I am doing my best to stay grounded in the passion. Learning to organize the event from the ground up, prepare for a beach clean up, write a inclusive yoga class & meditation and express my passion behind the project. Now, If only 2 people show up to practice yoga and community service, this event will be a success.. These things start small and I am excited to begin- To doing and not just trying.

Playa Del Rey- 1st Beach Clean Up

It all begins with an idea.

I have been thinking about, talking about and manifesting hosting community beach clean ups for a long time. By synchronicity, a couple of things happened last week that sparked my passion and to take action. I was reminded of something my dad told me when I was younger while we were at a museum. I, an aspiring artist, said something like “I could do that”. He told me “the difference is, this person did do it”. It resonates today more than it did then. So while doing my normal beach walk, I could not help but notice how much trash was trapped in the sand. The following day, it was worse. Gas tanks, dead animals, plastic, broken cans, and lots of clothes, it looked like a scene from a movie. People crowding and staring at the trash dump that enveloped their space that usually allows decompression, connection and clarity. At least thats how it felt to me. A pit in my stomach. Thinking about pollution and environmental issues is daunting and intimidating and typically causes me to freeze. (in the sympathetic -fight, flight, freeze, faun…) The voice in my mind tells me that nothing I do will actually make a difference and that we are pretty much fucked. It also that if I did what I dreamt about I would make some sort of difference. All of this to say, when the message my dad told me years ago floated through my mind as I was staring at the seaweed patch that was more plastic than natural, It was time to take action.

Today we did our first beach clean up at Playa Del Rey. The plan was to be out there 9am-11ish and we ended up powering through until 1:30.
I was feeling so thankful for my people who came to support and insanely rewarded seeing how much we were able to accomplish.
I provided gloves, trash bags, and sanitation wipes and I was so inspired when strangers passing by offered some of their time to clean with us. There were also people who were not able to help but offered us thanks and acknowledged what we were doing.
We ended up filling 5 large bags and left feeling connected to each other, the beach and the community.
Overall I am super proud of what we came out and accomplished today and I am super excited to watch it grow.
In the future I can see events including yoga, meditation, coffee, food, music and community beach clean up!
